UFC star Jorge Masvidal was defeated by a unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 in Miami Saturday night and then promptly called it a career.
The 38-year-old veteran said he “just doesn’t feel the same” anymore when he steps into the octagon.
And he pointed out that he has had a long career with more than 50 fights. And he does, with a record of 36-15, but he really predates the MMA record and goes back all the way to his days appearing in backyard fight videos alongside the likes of Kimbo Slice.
It was an emotional ending for the popular MMA slugger, but Masvidal quickly changed gears and pointed out former President Donald Trump, who was octagon side with Dana White, Kid Rock, and Mike Tyson Saturday night, calling him “the best president in the history of the world.” Masvidal also shouted out Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and asked the fans to keep Florida a red state.
He then called for that “Let’s Go Brandon (expletive)” to be removed from power and asked the crowd to join him in a “Let’s Go Brandon,” chant which he repeated twice on the mic before exiting the octagon.
Masvidal’s willingness to slug it out made him a fan favorite, and he had some big wins over the likes of Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone in his career. He also had a vicious flying knee knockout of Ben Askren at UFC 239 which made just about every knockout highlight reel that year.
But he went on a losing streak from there against the best that the UFC’s welterweight division has to offer.
Masvidal lost back-to-back fights to then champ Kamaru Usman, the last of which came via a blistering knockout at UFC 251, and also lost to his personal nemesis Colby Covington and then to Burns on Saturday night in Miami.
